Parental Engagement - Charlotte Lamb (Literacy Specialist)

Let’s get male role models in school!

Schools always ask us how they can increase parental engagement? So with Father’s Day nearly upon us why not invite dads, grandads, stepdads or any male role model in and spend some time in class, reading. You could even provide coffee and biscuits.

A great way of engaging parents is by having an open door policy and inviting them in regularly for some early morning reading. It’s fantastic to normalise parents coming in to school and prioritise building good relationships, so that there is a team supporting the child. By inviting fathers and other male figures into school it will show them that they are important in their child’s reading journey.  Seeing adults as readers and enjoying books has a huge impact on how children feel about reading. I have gathered some fabulous book recommendations right here, perfect for reading with male role models, so you can consider adding them to your book collection or picking them from the Library. Have them facing forwards on display for pupils to choose to read as part of a fun morning in school.
